The Department of Economics, Mankachar College was established in 1971. Presently, the Department has a sanctioned strength of 04 (four) faculty members. Since its inception in 1971, the Department has been rendering its tireless services towards the teaching-learning process of the subject among the students. The department has also been playing an important role in creating economic awareness among the general people of the locality, through different programmes like seminars, discussion, meetings etc. 

The Department offers Economics as Honours (Major) and Regular (General/Pass) courses to the UG students and also as an Elective subject to the H.S. students. The Department conducts Sessional/Unit Tests, Home Assignments etc. as part of its Internal Assessment by which a close observation of progression is maintained. Departmental Seminar is conducted for both Honours and Regular (General) students for partial fulfillment of the course.Tutorial/remedial classes are regularly conducted by the Department for weak students/slow learners. 

There is a micro-library in the department with about 130 text and reference books, used mostly by the teachers of the department. Teachers and students can also avail the facility from the Central Library of the College. There is a total of about 3500 nos. of text and reference books on Economics in the Central Library.
