Mankachar College was established in 1971 with Arts Stream alone. An organizing meeting for establishing the college was held on the 8th March, 1970 in the J.M.H.S School premises with Late Zahirul Islam, the then MLA of
Mankachar L A Constituency in the chair. He was the President of the organizing Governing Body of the college and Sri Shankarlal Agarwala, M.Com., LLB. was the Secretary of the till 1981. The college came under Deficit
Grants-in-Aid system on 1st September, 1981. The general people of the locality contributed generously for the development of the college and, hence, the college was nomenclature as “Mankachar College”. The College in
affiliated to Gauhati University and registered under Section 2(f) & 12(B) of UGC Act. 1956.
The College started with 68 male and 11 female students in the Mankachar J.M.H.S. School premises with the classes being taken in the morning shift. The college was shifted to its own campus in January, 1979. The land of the
college was donated in the memory of Late Fazal Sheikh of Sarkarpara, Mankachar by members of his family on the 26th day of May 1973.
Subsequently in 1999, Science Stream at the degree level has been introduced to meet the requirement of the aspiring students of the locality. However, this stream is yet to be Provincialised.
Shri Mihir Kr. Dev, M.A., B.T., E.T. was the founder principal of the college who adorned the principal’s chair for a pretty long period of time till his retirement on 28th February, 1999. He was succeeded by Dr. Ahijuddin Sheikh. On Dr. Sheikh’s transfer to Moirabari College, Dr. Sailendra Narayan Thakuria took over as i/c. Principal. Prof. Akheruzzaman, M.A. succeeded Dr. Thakuria on his retirement on 31.03.2011 as i/c Principal. He was succeeded by Dr. Abed Ali as regular Principal of the college on 31.01.2012 and Dr. Ali continued to be the principal of the college till his retirement on 28.02.2021. He was succeeded by P.C. Mohapatra, M.A. (English), B.Ed, P.G.C.T.E. as i/c Principal on 01.03.2021 and Prof. Mohapatra continues to be the i/c Principal of the college till his retirement on 31.03.2022. He was succeeded by Dr. Sudipta Dutta, M.A., Ph.D, as i/c Principal on 01.04.2022 and, Dr. Dutta continues to be the i/c Principal of the college till date.
Presently, Mankachar College imparts education with an efficient and dedicated teaching staff to nearly one thousand students annually from Higher Secondary to Degree level. The College has been playing a vital role as a provincialized college in this educationally, economically and socially backward district of South Salmara-Mankachar in imparting higher education both in Arts and Science streams.
